DR PAUL J SCHWARTZ

Dr. Paul J. Schwartz has been in the private practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Southern Maryland since 1987. He is respected by his colleagues as a highly skilled and dedicated Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He is a nationally known expert in the field of ambulatory anesthesia and has lectured and published extensively on the subject. He is a senior attending in the Department of Surgery at the Washington Hospital Center, where he is actively involved in the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency training program in which he serves as a clinical instructor in Surgery and chief course instructor in Ambulatory Anesthesia.

Dr. Schwartz practices the full scope of modern Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with particular interest in dental implant surgery, third molar (wisdom tooth) removal surgery and the treatment of oral and facial pathology. Dr. Schwartz completed two full post-graduate residency programs. First, a two year medical residency in Anesthesiology/Critical Care Medicine 1982-1984, and then a three year surgical residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,1984-1987 both at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He received his doctorate degree in Dental Medicine with highest honors and was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary society at the University of Pittsburgh in 1982. He received his undergraduate training at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Pharmacy.

Dr. Schwartz is a Diplomate and board certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (AAOMS), a fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ACOMS), a fellow of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology (ADSA), and a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and a Diplomate of the National Board of Dental Anesthesiology. He is currently serving on the executive committee of the Maryland Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was a founding member and officer of the Patuxent Dental Society. He has served both societies as president. Dr. Schwartz has been elected by his peers to represent the state of Maryland as delegate to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and as delegate to the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. Dr. Schwartz serves on the board certification surgical specialty examination committee, the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He is past chairman and consultant to the AAOMS Committee on Anesthesia (AAOMS CAN) and committee member of the American Dental Association (ADA) Committee on Anesthesiology. Dr. Schwartz has served as editor in chief and published with his peers the 2013 AAOMS Office Anesthesia Evaluation (OAE) manual. This text is considered the standard for the safe practice of office based Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Schwartz also served as editor of the 2014 Clinics of North America, Ambulatory Anesthesia issue. Recently, Dr. Schwartz was elected to serve as a director of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. This organization provides a national forum for education and research in order to promote safe and effective patient care in anesthesiology.

Dr. Schwartz volunteers his free time as an instructor in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and the ‘Simman’, simulated medical emergency/airway course. Dr. Schwartz also participates in various charities with donated oral and maxillofacial surgical services programs.
